The Directorate of Secondary Education, Assam has officially announced the registration process for the centrally sponsored National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) Scheme for the academic session 2026–2027. Under this initiative, selected meritorious students studying in government and provincialized schools across Assam receive financial support to continue their secondary education without financial constraints.
A total of 2,411 scholarships are allocated for the state of Assam. The scheme targets bright students from economically weaker sections to reduce drop-out rates at class VIII and encourage them to pursue higher education up to class XII.
Eligibility & Selection Criteria
To be eligible for the NMMS Scholarship 2026-27, applicants must fulfill specific educational and socio-economic criteria established by the Ministry of Education and Directorate of Secondary Education, Assam:
- Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed Class VIII examination and currently be enrolled as regular students in Class IX in Government, Local Body, or Provincialized schools in Assam.
- Income Criteria: The combined annual income of the candidate's parents from all sources must not exceed Rs. 3,50,000/- per annum.
- Ineligibility: Students enrolled in Kendriya Vidyalayas (KV), Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNV), residential schools run by State Government, and private schools are not eligible for this scholarship scheme.
- Selection Process: Selection is based on a state-level written examination comprising Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
